The 2025 MLB Draft has come and gone. 615 new prospects enter the Royal Rumble. Unique facial hair, signature moves, and flair in tow. Some will rise to the top, others will flame out under the pressure of professional baseball. But along the way, awesome things will happen. Things you and I don’t expect.
Bryan Woo wasn’t supposed to be an All-Star. Hunter Brown was unrecognizable at Wayne State. Jacob Misiorowski wasn’t supposed to be an amendment added to the Geneva Convention — that man is a weapon. Every year, there are surprises. 2025 will be no different.
These are superlatives and surprises to watch for over the course of the next few years. They are all locks. Take it to the bank.
Slater de Brun, aka Lil Slayyy, will open for Zach Bryan Band at the 2026 All-Star Game
The Baltimore Orioles drafted Lil Slayyy with the no. 37 pick on Sunday. An aspiring musician, de Brun has several songs released for streaming on Spotify and Apple Music. It’s honestly pretty good. Give it a listen. Or wait until the 2026 All-Star Game.
Mason Estrada will add a new wrinkle to an already glowing Dodgers R&D department
The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Massachusetts Institute of Technology righty Mason Estrada in the seventh round on Monday. Estrada is majoring in aerospace engineering and is smarter than you are. Not only is he smarter than you are, but he also throws 96 mph. How’s that for emasculating? Surely the Dodgers won’t find a way to leverage both talents…
Pirates’ social media accounts won’t overuse the Jared Jones thing
The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted LSU first baseman Jared Jones in the ninth round on Monday afternoon. They already have a Jared Jones, and a good one at that. Surely the internet won’t beat this coincidence into a thick, pasty pulp with cheap memes by this time next summer.
Max Martin will turn out to be the best prospect drafted in the 10th round of this draft
Both the Boston Red Sox and the Kansas City Royals drafted players named Max Martin in the 10th round on Monday. For the record, both were ranked on the Top 615 board — the former at No. 283, the latter at 304. Martin will end up the better of the two prospects.
The federal government will place a ban on the use of the name “Cade”, or more specifically, /keɪd/
In total, 13 players with the names Cade, Kade, Caden, Kaeden, Kaiden, and Caedmon were drafted on Sunday and Monday. What the hell was going on from 2003-2006 to warrant such insistence?
The Twilight Saga returns, starring Callan Fang
The Minnesota Twins selected Harvard righty Callan Fang in the 13th round on Monday. “I know why you need the thunder,”
Sam Horn will throw more innings than he does passes in 2026
The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Missouri quarterback (and starting pitcher) Sam Horn in the 17th round on Monday. He’s currently fighting for the starting job under center for the Tigers. That’s so Dodgers.
Jay Dill v. Cannon Pickell will go so hard
The Athletics drafted righty Jay Dill out of Troy University in the 18th round. The Miami Marlins drafted righty Cannon Pickell in the 20th round out of Western Carolina. I will relish this matchup.
