With their 16th round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, the Chicago Cubs have selected RHP JP Wheat.
The 473rd overall pick, Wheat was one of the standouts of the New Balance Baseball Future Stars Series 2021 National Tournament, and was invited to pitch at the Main Event at Citi Field, but was ultimately unable to attend.
PICK ANALYSIS BY JEREMY BOOTH, CEO AND PRESIDENT OF THE NEW BALANCE BASEBALL FUTURE STARS SERIES: JP has a good arm and a ton of projection, also an older guy at 19 years old. Similarly, has not had some of the best advice in the world around him. It’s hard, some of these kids run into motives instead of what’s best for them. We try to help them and allow them to get all the information to make their own decisions and not push them one way or the other. Others are different. He’s another guy who’s 97-98. These guys are all over the place now at this point, but if he can put it together and get the right people around him, he’s got a chance to be pretty good.”
