The Cincinnati Reds have added Kenya Huggins, Jr. with the 123rd overall pick of the 2022 MLB Draft, reuniting him with fellow FSS alum and Chipola teammate Cam Collier in pro ball.
Huggins pitched in the 2020 New Balance Baseball Future Stars Series National Combine, and went on to earn an invitation to International Week at Fenway Park. He showed great improvement the following year at the 2021 Future Stars Series Pre-Draft Combine, and remained eligible to be selected this year after going the JuCo route.
PICK ANALYSIS BY JEREMY BOOTH, CEO AND PRESIDENT OF THE NEW BALANCE BASEBALL FUTURE STARS SERIES: Kenya is up to 99 now with maybe one of the best sliders in the draft. He just has to pitch. He has to get innings and build. The body is what it should be. He’s 19 years old, and the upside is where it should be. He’s a great kid. He’s with the Reds, and that’s a great spot for him, especially since they got rid of some of the people that were involved in some of their pitching development beforehand. They can mold that and teach that. You don’t have to teach him velocity, it’s already a checked box. If he gets more feel to throw strikes, it’ll be good.”
