Whether or not Oakland has a team long-term isn’t set in stone, but the Athletics, as-is, are incessantly rebuilding. At times that’s a bit more obvious than others.
Over the last few seasons, the A’s have traded away Sean Murphy, Frankie Montas, Matt Chapman, Matt Olson, and Chris Bassitt, remodeling organization and pushing winning back a few years.
As a result, the big-league roster is younger with more upside, and the farm system has more depth.
Ages as of July 1, 2023
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
1 | 21 | Tyler Soderstrom | C | 60 |
Soderstrom has all the phyical skills to be a No. 1 catcher, and despite being just 21 is knocking on the door of the majors already.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
2 | 25 | Ken Waldichuk | LHP | 50 |
Acquired from the Yankees in exchange for Montas last summer, Waldichuk is big-league ready, but his fastball value is key to whether or not his upside is in the middle of the rotation or beyond.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
3 | 22 | Daniel Susac | C | 50 |
Offensively Susac is power-over-hit, but such a profile is not uncommon and has worked out for the likes of Travis d’Arnaud, Salvador Perez, Yan Gomes, and Mike Zunino.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
4 | 24 | Mason Miller | RHP | 50 |
Miller is a three-pitch right-hander with big velocity and an above-average slider.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
5 | 23 | Zack Gelof | 2B | 45 |
Gelof has a great shot to make an impact with his bat provided he sticks at second base for the foreseeable future.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
6 | 28 | Max Muncy | SS | 40 |
Muncy probably stays up the middle defensively, but it’s a power approach at the plate which thus far has produced low averages and too many strikeouts.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
7 | 21 | Kyle Muller | LHP | 45 |
Muller’s arsenal is command based, but without the command, leaving an above-average slider in the holster too often.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
8 | 24 | Gunnar Hoglund | RHP | 45 |
Hoglund was Toronto’s first rounder in 2021 and acquired in the Chapman trade, bringing mid-rotation upsideif he can get and stay healthy.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
9 | 24 | Esteury Ruiz | OF | 45 |
Ruiz essentially won out over Cristian Pache this spring with speed and a better trending hit tool.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
10 | 23 | Denzel Clarke | OF | 45 |
Clark can run, throw, and hit for power, putting ultimate pressure on his ability to make enough contact for any of it to hold value.
