2023 MLB DRAFT: Colin Houck, SS — Parkview (GA)

June 30, 2023

Google his name, and you’ll see both the dilemma and intrigue that Houck provides big league teams heading into the upcoming Draft. Colin Houck’s first page of results varies between those of both his baseball and football exploits, and the Mississippi State commit could certainly find his calling at the latter. For the former, however, he’s a projected first-round talent, but given his potential route to pro football a few years down the road, some teams may, at minimum, have concerns over his signability to get him out of at least getting to explore his options.

FSS Event History: Houck attended the Georgia Bombers Scout Day back in 2022, but was unable to throw due to an injury suffered playing football. He still was able to run, hit and take ground balls. At the time, his highest future grades were on his power and running, where he was listed as having good “first step quickness.”

Current Ranking in Joe Doyle’s FSS Plus Top 600: 22

Joe Doyle on Colin Houck:

A decorated two-sport athlete, Houck has plenty of opportunities to play quarterback at the D1 level should he elect to go that direction. On the diamond, he’s a twitchy, athletic shortstop with a strong arm and hittability that evaluators believe could really surge if he gives up the gridiron. Houck is quiet and compact at the plate with average bat speed, though his willingness to spray the ball deep gap-to-gap is what has scouts excited. There’s some questions as to whether power will ever be a huge part of his game, but who knows what can happen once he dedicates to his craft. The floor here is a true shortstop with a solid hit tool.
