Five Names To Know: JUCO Regional Seminole (Oklahoma)

FSS JUCO Super Regionals

Recently, the New Balance Baseball Future Stars Series held a JUCO Regional event at Brian Crawford Memorial Sports Complex in Seminole, Oklahoma.

The two-day event was held on two fields with a multitude of teams participating — Seminole, Navarro, Hutch, Amarillo, NCTC, Grayson, Crowder, Enid, Western and Northeast — in a total of ten games. Our scouting staff was on site and the reports are in, and it’s time to take a quick look at some of the top standouts from the event as sorted by a proprietary FSS OFP metric.

Brayden Henry, RHP

Henry is a sophomore out of Hutchinson Community College with a six-foot-two, 180-pound frame. He’s coming off a massive freshman year in which he posted a miniscule 0.82 WHIP over 41.1 innings pitched in which he recorded 52 strikeouts while racking up five wins and three saves. Henry flashed a fastball that got up to 93 miles per hour while also showing command of a cutter, curveball and change at our event.

Our scouts “absolutely loved this guy,” and he was the highest-graded player of the weekend. Our scouts see a D1, “big strike thrower with four pitches; definite starter type (4/5)” and gave him a Tyler Mahle comp.

Roman Cariaga, C

Cariaga is a Navarro College catcher who announced a commitment to the University of Oklahoma earlier this month shortly after the FSS event. A 6-foot-1, 215-pound sophomore, Cariaga hit .285 with nine homers and 50 RBI over a 50 game sample-size in his collegiate debut last year.

The highest-graded position player our scouts saw, Cariaga has some impressive numbers on his report, including a future 60 for power production and a future 70 for throwing. Our scouts see a “potential everyday player” with a Jason LaRue comp, and got consistent 1.83-1.90 times from behind the plate. At the dish, he produced consistent exit velos between 95 and 102 miles per hour and will fascinating to watch as he continues to put in the work to get better.

Grady Scarborough, RHP

Like his Navarro teammate, Scarborough also recently announced a big D1 commitment shortly after the event in Seminole, as he’s headed Baylor University.

A six-foot-two, 170-pound righty sophomore, Scarborough is coming off a freshman campaign in which he was used sparingly, with only six appearances to his name. He struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings of work last season, but flashed some big stuff at our event, getting up to 95 miles per hour with his fastball while also showing a slider that sat in the low 80’s.

Scouts see that offering as a current 60 and believe “the break and violence of his slider was future MLB pitch,” and see a D1 mid-major future here.

Rowin Donaldson, INF/RHP

Donaldson is a really intriguing two-way sophomore out of Amarillo College who was up to 97 MPH off the bump at our event and was the Co-Offensive MVP at Amarillo last year. A five-foot-ten, 175-pound right-handed hitter and pitcher, Donaldson is a 6.4 60-yard dash runner per his agency, and ran a 4.19 out of the RH side at the event per our scouts. They note he has a “David Cone-type build” and liked the “snap crackle and pop finish with ball life; sink, jump ball picks up speed thru strike zone.” At the plate, they see Donaldson as a “D1-type hitter.”

Clearly, there’s a lot to like and a lot to keep an eye on moving forward here.

Brooks Nelson, RHP

Nelson is a high-upside righty arm out of Navarro College with a 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame who was also a quarterback at his high school in Texas.

An incoming freshman, our scouts saw a “potential starter type” with a Marty Bystrom comp; Bystrom was a six-year big-leaguer in the 80’s with the Phillies and Yankees. Nelson flashed a three-pitch variety of offerings with a fastball up to 93, changeup and slider, but it was the latter that really has a chance to carry him to the next level. Our scouts saw a pitch “hitters had no chance” against and believed he was “one of the more projectable future pitchers” with D1-type ability.
