Future Stars Series alum Justin Lange was the surprise return for the New York Yankees in the dealt that sent 2020 MLB home run leader Luke Voit to the San Diego Padres on Friday morning.
Lange, only 20 years old, was taken with the 34th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft by San Diego, and made his professional debut for them last season, using his 100 MPH fastball to rack up 29 strikeouts in his first 22 innings of work in pro ball with the Padres Arizona League team.
Lange rose to prominence with a stunning performance at International Week with the Future Stars Series in 2019, wowing scouts by striking out the first four batters he faced at the event. As his velocity continued to climb, he became a very quick riser in the following year’s Draft, and was one of the four FSS alums taken in the first round in 2020; he was joined by Mick Abel, Zac Veen and Drew Romo.
Minor league rosters have yet to be formally set, but Lange is listed on being on the Low-A Tampa Tarpons for the upcoming 2022 season as of now.
