Seattle began a rebuild after the 2018 season, one that’s ahead of schedule having spent just two seasons down leafing to two straight 90-win campaigns and the end of the long playoff drought.
The Mariners have done it almost entirely by drafting, developing, and trading, with Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Julio Rodriguez, and Cal Raleigh coming through the system. Luis Castillo, Ty France, Eugenio Suarez, Teoscar Hernandez, Kolten Wong, and Andrés Muñoz, among others, acquired via trade.
The club’s system has taken a hit due to the above graduations and deals, but the stables are far from empty down on the farm.
Ages as of July 1, 2023
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
1 | 24 | Bryce Miller | RHP | 55 |
Miller’s fastball offers velocity and carry, and his slider and changeup project as average or better major-league offerings.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
2 | 20 | Harry Ford | C | 55 |
Ford has advanced plate skills, good present strength for game power, and his athleticism allows for positional flexibility in case his bat evolves a lot quicker than his catching skill.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
3 | 19 | Cole Young | SS | 50 |
Young is solid across the board, but his best tool is his ability to put the barrel on the ball, lending confidence he’ll develop at least fringy power while he makes a lot of contact with a line drive swing.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
4 | 17 | Felnin Celesten | SS | 50 |
The switch-hitter has projectable power, plus speed, and every chance to stick at shortstop for the long haul.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
5 | 24 | Emerson Hancock | RHP | 45 |
The former No. 6 overall pick needs innings and a bump in overall stuff to regain some of the status that made him a sought after arm. For now, it’s mostly average offerings.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
6 | 23 | Bryan Woo | RHP | 45 |
Woo, still playing catch-up from time missed due to UCL surgery, is an underrated athlete projecting big fastball value and a chance at two average or better secondaries.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
7 | 23 | Prelander Berroa | RHP | 45 |
He’s almost certainly a bullpen arm, but Berroa’s fastball-slider combo is elite and a high-leverage role is there if he can throw consistent strikes.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
8 | 18 | Michael Arroyo | 2B | 45 |
Arroyo has hitting chops and bat speed to develop impact power at second base.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
9 | 19 | Gabriel Gonzalez | OF | 40 |
Gonzalez was impressive at the plate as an 18-year-old in the California League last summer, but there are questions about power that limit his ceiling.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
10 | 24 | Taylor Dollard | RHP | 40 |
Dollard complements a fringy fastball with plus command and two above-average breaking balls toward a back-end rotation profile.
