Despite a pair of aggressive moves with the farm system the past year and a half (Luis Castillo, Eugenio Suarez, Jesse Winker), the Seattle Mariners passed on paying the price to add significant pieces to the 2023 roster.
Instead, Jerry Dipoto acquired two prospects and a veteran backup infielder in exchange for closer Paul Sewald. Seattle added three top 10 prospect in the draft, too.
The Mariners’ system is deep, but lacks proximity and pitching depth, thanks to so many recent graduations (Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Jarred Kelenic, Julio Rodriguez, Bryce Miller, Bryan Woo, Cal Raleigh). There’s a chance, however, things look very different a year from now, as high picks and international signings develop and progress.
