Program 15 Player Profile: 2018 INF Jack Filby, NorCal Baseball (UCLA Commit)

June 11, 2017

It’s rare to see something other than a smile on Jack Filby’s face.

The 2018 MLB Draft eligible third baseman/shortstop describes himself as a grinder, someone who’s going to give you 110 percent and run out every ball.  But he also makes sure you know he’s having fun while he’s doing it.

“I play the game the right way, and I always have a smile on my face,” Filby said.  “I just want to have fun with it.  It’s just a game at the end of the day, but it’s something I take a lot of pride in and something I really enjoy.  I love that team camaraderie.”

Filby, who plays for McClatchy High School as well as Rob Bruno’s NorCal Baseball program, first linked up with the latter when he was about 14 years old.  He was playing at a local tournament when he’d caught Bruno’s eye, and about six months later, he joined.

“I haven’t looked back, and it’s been a great experience since,” Filby said.

“I’ve learned a lot being surrounded by Rob and his fellow coaches that have taught me a lot about the game; not only the intangibles, but playing your own game, figuring out your own limits.  But there’s some great coaching and techniques they provide, as well as advice.  They let us play, and ultimately down the road it’s good exposure in these big tournaments, which helps with the process.  It’s a great organization to be a part of, and I’m looking forward to this next year with them as well.”

Filby has committed to UCLA, and will be a big boost to their storied program.  He can’t wait to get started with the Bruins.

“I’m ecstatic,” he said.  “That’s actually been my dream school ever since I was a young kid, and getting the opportunity thanks to Rob and the right tournaments and the right coaching by them has really led me to where I am, which I’m very excited and grateful for.”
