Crews wins 2023 Golden Spikes Award

June 25, 2023

From Future Stars to Golden Spikes.

For the first time ever, an FSS alum won the prestigious Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur player in the United States “based on their athletic ability, sportsmanship, character, and overall contribution to the sport.”

First presented in 1978, Crews joins a very prestigious list of names who have gone on to incredible accomplishments in professional baseball, including: Adley Rustchman, Kris Bryant, Bryce Harper, Buster Posey, David Price and Stephen Strasburg.

Currently the driving force on a deep LSU roster at the dish that is one win away from capturing the College World Series, the outfielder has essentially won every award available to him; SEC Player of the Year, All-SEC First Team, All-SEC, SEC Player of the Week and SEC Community Service Team honoree. A junior, Crews has reached base in all 69 games this season, leads the country in runs scored with 95 and is second in the nation with a .562 OBP.

Barring a seismic shift leading up to the upcoming 2023 MLB Draft, he is also the heavy favorite to go No. 1 overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 9.

He is, of course, also a Future Stars Series alum, having shown his vast potential at both the 2019 National Tournaments as a member of the Scorpions — where one FSS scout called him “the best position player prospect I saw” — as well as at what was then known as International Week, which was being held at Fenway Park for the first time that year.

“Can be special” stands out from the notes on his FSS scouting reports back then, and he’s certainly lived up to that ever since, gambling on himself by withdrawing his name out of the Draft back in 2020 despite being projected as a likely second round pick, and instead going to LSU and working his way up becoming the best collegiate player on the planet.
