Texas Rangers Top 30 Prospects 2023 Preseason

April 4, 2023

The Texas Rangers have spent more than three quarters of a billion dollars on free agents the past two offseasons (Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, Andrew Heaney , among others) in an effort to sprint to contention, rather than rely much at all on a rebuild through scouting and development.

That’s probably a good thing for Rangers fans. Despite a very solid collection of talent in the minors, there don’t appear to be any future stars, and the biggest upside plays are years from the majors.

Ages as of July 1, 2023

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
1 20 Evan Carter OF 55

With speed, defense, and a hit tool leading the way, Carter checks all the boxes for an average or better regular in the big leagues, but his power will dictate anything beyond that.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
2 25 Josh Jung 3B 55

The only thing Jung doesn’t do well is run, but there is some swing-and-miss which could put the hit tool at risk in the majors.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
3 23 Owen White RHP 50

White’s fastball-curveball tandem is enough to get him to The Show, but he’s a legitimate four-pitch starter just shy of average command.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
4 23 Brock Porter RHP 50

Porter is a projectable but physical right-hander with plus velocity and a path to three above-average secondary offerings.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
5 21 Luisangel Acuña SS 45

Acuña is a surefire shortstop glove with signs he’ll hit for enough average and power to play regularly, though it may take some time for the bat to arrive.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
6 23 Jack Leiter RHP 45

Often looking more like a reliever than a starter in his first full year in pro ball, Leiter still has two projectable breaking balls and athleticism that should lead to sufficient control.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
7 24 Justin Foscue 2B 45

Foscue flipped a switch last season, greatly improving his contact rates and getting him back on track as a bat-first second baseman nearing the majors.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
8 23 Aaron Zavala OF 45

Zavala’s left-handed swing is clean and consistent, supporting beliefs he will hit for average with high OBPs, and at least approach average power.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
9 23 Dustin Harris OF 45

An adequate corner glove, Harris has a chance to hit 30 homers and profile well as ane veryday player.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
10 23 Cole Winn RHP 45

Winn tilts the scales a bit with his fastball and curveball, with an average slider, changeup, and command suggesting a rotation role.
