Jenker Romero, RHP — Georgia Premier Academy
HT/WT: 6-3/190
Winter Signature Event: Caribbean Classic
Romero authored something of a redemption story at this year’s Main Event, returning to Globe Life Field and mostly dominating one year after an uneven showing following an invite as a sophomore. The stuff, while always there, saw an uptick, as did the command, something he credited largely to how he positioned his glove during his delivery in smoothing out his mechanics.
Having committed to the University of Oklahoma, the hard-throwing righty’s immediate future is somewhat set, although he’s sure to draw some significant draft interest, particularly as we get closer to July.
Until then, however, the work continues, and we’ll get another look at him at the return of our Caribbean Classic presented by DraftLine, set for January 17-19 at Estadio Isidoro Garcia in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. The ceiling is high for Romero, who our scouts have profiled as a future MLB starter, one who “in time can make himself into a real high-profile type.”
Romero was up to 95 mph with a slider (77-80) and cutter (85) in Arlington, showing a loose, quick arm and live ball. Still somehow under the radar even as the Draft draws closer, he’ll be a name the industry is going to circle, drawing comps from our staff to long-time big-leaguer Ramon Martinez with a thin, athletic build and plus stuff across the board — “this guy has a chance to be one you see on TV blowing 100mph one day,” seems like high praise in our most recent report.
Full rosters will be announced later but some of the players that have committed and will attend include: LHP/1B RJ Cope (Lawrenceville, GA), INF Easton Autrey (Corsicana, TX), LHP Hudson Tuley (Abilene, TX), INF Isaac Torres (Converse, TX), C Jax Van Valkenburg (Owasso, OK), INF Cole Prosek (Senatobia, MS), RHP Michael Teasley (Oak Ridge, TN), INF Dominic Pellegrin (Metairie, LA), Kaizen Dorsette (Nassau, Bahamas), Malique Isreal (Nassau, Bahamas), Asher Simms (Nassau, Bahamas), Yeickxel Rivera (Ponce, Puerto Rico), INF/OF Kail Pena (Caguas, Puerto Rico), Alan Gippson (Gurabo, Puerto Rico), Yeriel Rivera (Coamo, Puerto Rico), Carlos Coira (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico), SS Reilyn Mendoza (Dominican Republic), SS Caonabo Cosme Jr. (Dominican Republic), SS Ismael Beltre (Dominican Republic), Rodolfo Sanchez (Dorado, Puerto Rico), Saul Maldonado (Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) and Derick Cedeno (Yauco, Puerto Rico).
