Tre Phelps is a four-year alum of New Balance Future Stars Series, including the Caribbean Classic, Underclass Elite, and the 2022 Main Event.
He always showed the strength, bat speed, line-drive swing, and plate coverage to excel at all levels. Phelps skipped pro ball and headed to Georgia, where his first two seasons were strong, despite a small step back in production last season.
Phelps’ start to the 2026 campaign may be a sign he’s ready to put that regression permanently in the rearview mirror, just in time for his draft stock to soar and solidify.
Phelps’ first 18 games of 2026 have resulted in a massive .406/.552/.844 slash, including eight homers, four doubles, and just eight strikeouts in 87 plate appearances.
It’s “just the non-conference schedule,” but even the batted ball data screams improvement.
Phelps is batting .361 with a .917 slug versus fastballs and .412 with a .588 slug versus breaking balls. He’s whiffed just once on 20 swings of pitches 92 mph and above and has found 12 barrels already in 18 contests.
Scouts generally want to see better swing choices versus better pitching, especially since Phelps’ bat is an extremely high ratio of his overall value. New Balance Future Stars Series President of Baseball Operations Jeremy Booth tosses a Edwin Encarnacion comp on that bat, though.
Phelps will get a chance to face some of that top-end pitching this weekend when Tennessee rolls into Foley Field for three games where the Vols will send out right-hander Landon Mack (3-1, 2.38 ERA, 30 SO, 22.2 IP, 96 mph fastball), left-hander Evan Blanco (1-2. 2.75 ERA, 31 SO, 19.2 IP), and ace Tegan Kuhns, who may be among the top college arms selected in the draft come July. Kuhns is up to 97 mph and has three solid secondaries, led by an 81-84 mph slider and mid-80s changeup.
The early word on Phelps’ draft stock is sometime on Day 2, but the more he hits, the better chance he has to threaten Day 1 of a very deep class. Day 1 consists of three full rounds, plus comp picks. A year ago, there were 105 selections on the first day of the draft.
Phelps’ scouting report carried a lot of 55s and 60s into college ball, and he’s flashed those tools in Athens for two years. His hot start could be a sign he’s putting it all together.
