San Francisco Giants Top 30 Prospects 2023 Preseason

April 2, 2023

The San Francisco Giants are among the least farm-reliant teams in baseball, often going for the short-term veteran via free agency or trade, including the likes of Alex Cobb, Sean Manaea, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, Joc Pederson, and two newcomers in Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger.

The current state of the system suggests help is on the way, however, specifically in the outfield and on the mound with their No. 1 prospect.

Ages as of July 1, 2023

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
1 22 Kyle Harrison LHP 60

Harrison comes at hitters with a devastating three-pitch mix, starting with a fastball up to 98 mph coming from an extremely low launch to set up two swing-and-miss secondary pitches.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
2 21 Marco Luciano SS 60

Luciano has big raw power and some hit tool concerns, but some issues with his back have curbed his athletic projections, including his chances to stay up the middle.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
3 24 Casey Schmitt 3B 50

Schmitt projects well defensively at third, but there are questions about his ability to hit for average and get on base. That said, almost all of his offensive markers took significant strides forward in 2022.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
4 21 Luis Matos OF 50

Matos is an aggressive hitter with electric hands and a chance to stick in center field.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
5 22 Reggie Crawford LHP/1B 50

Crawford was the club’s first-round pick last July, No. 30 overall, after serving as a two-way player at UCONN. He’s up to 100 from the left side and offers a devastating low-90s slider.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
6 25 Vaun Brown OF 45

Brown can fly, track down anything in center field, and offers above-average power at the pate.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
7 22 Grant McCray OF 45

McCray, the son of former big-league outfielder Rodney McCray, has a solid collection of tools, led by 70-grade speed.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
8 23 Mason Black RHP 45

It’s a fastball-slider-changeup combo for Black, the former pair consistently above-average to plus, including a fastball into the mid-90s.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
9 24 Landen Roupp RHP 45

Roupp doesn’t throw hard, but has an absolute hammer of a curveball and has an above-average slider, too.

RANK AGE PLAYER POS OFP
10 22 Carson Whisenhunt LHP 45

Whisenhunt has plus command of a fringe-average fastball and curveball, but an elite changeup that misses bats.
