The Boston Red Sox’s Opening Day roster has merely a small handful of homegrown talent, led by star third baseman Rafael Devers. When the club was a perennial World Series contender, the organization did more damage from within.
The Sox do, however, have a chance to push a few impact players onto their 26-man in the next year or two, and perhaps Triston Casas, the club’s Opening Day first baseman, is the start.
*Ages as of July 1, 2023
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
1 | 20 | Marcelo Mayer | SS | 60 |
Mayer’s aesthetically pleasing swing comes with power potential, a chance to hit .260 with high on-base marks, and a real shot to stick at shortstop.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
2 | 23 | Triston Casas | 1B | 50 |
Casas makes consistent contact, particularly for a hitter with his kind of power potential, and could be at the cool corner in Beantown for a decade.
RANK | RANK | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
3 | 19 | Miguel Bleis | OF | 50 |
The raw power is tremendous from a bigger swing than the player stands tall, but at 19 there’s refining needed and time for Bleis to get there.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
4 | 22 | Ceddanne Rafaela | OF | 50 |
One of the elite defensive center fielders in professional baseball also brings plus speed and a chance to get to average power.Mata

RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
6 | 21 | Nick Yorke | 2B | 45 |
If Yorke can manage to make enough contact there’s average or better power ready to make an impact, even if it’s as a utility player.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
7 | 24 | Enmanuel Valdez | 2B/3B | 45 |
Valdez’s power has exploded the last two seasons and he’s managing the strike zone well enough to suggest one of the first calls to the minors for help has Valdez’s name all over it.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
8 | 19 | Mikey Romero | SS | 45 |
Romero is a high-probability middle infielder with the swing of a batting champ in the mold of Tommy Edman.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
9 | 20 | Eddinson Paulino | SS | 45 |
Paulino brings intriguing raw power to the batter’s box and if he can stick up the middle the bat projects to play in the majors.
RANK | AGE | PLAYER | POS | OFP |
10 | 19 | Cutter Coffey | SS | 45 |
Coffey profiles best as a third baseman or utility player where hit bat and arm liely play best, but if the hit tool remains advanced and he maxes out the power the Red Sox will take a bat-first second baseman playing next to Mayer at Fenway Park.
