Over the last two years at FSS events, the 6-foot-5, 190-pound Trey Barnes has displayed good speed and athleticism, instincts on the bases and in the field, and the physical tools to hit and hit with power.
He’s a class of 2026 outfielder from Taylorsville High School (Miss.) with a commitment to Southern Miss. Barnes has improved each event with FSS, including impressive exit velocities up to 100 mph at the Main Event at Globe Life Field last October. His near-90 mph exit velocity over the weekend was among the top 3 in the event.
Compared to former major leaguers such as Mike Kelly, Barnes “oozes projection and strength potential” and “has bat speed and gets the barrel through the zone,” per FSS scouts. “He’s balanced with good hand position, and his head stays still.”
Defensively, Barnes makes accurate throws with some carry and has good gap-to-gap or gap-to-line range. His above-average speed — which may project better in the long term — allows for extra bases, and he shows good instincts during that process.
He’s run in the 4.2-4.3 second range up the first-base line, a sign he gets out of the box quickly and has explosiveness, but he’s also shown the agility to run fluid paths on extra-base hits and in going from first to home on a ball in the gap.
